Jimmy Hagood
I first met Jimmy when I was still in New York at Tabla. We would host BBQ Chefs into our kitchen to use our facilities during the Big Apple BBQ every year. Jimmy was one of those Chefs and BBQ legends. He fell in love with the food at Tabla and Chef Cardoz as much as we fell in love with his cooking.
Fast forward a bunch of years later, I decided to move to Charleston. When I landed here I knew next to nothing about the local food scene and Jimmy was quick to help me out. He extended his incredible Southern Hospitality to me in so many ways that I will always be grateful for. I have learned so much from Jimmy and continue to learn every time I meet him. He is a huge proponent of local food and encyclopedia of knowledge.
There is too much to Jimmy’s story to list, but he has developed what he calls Conservation Cuisine. Meaning that he believes in continuing food and growing traditions that preserve Charleston’s food agriculture past and take care of the land at the same time.
He grows and sells the Charleston Gold Rice that has made comeback from its thought to be extinct glory days 100s of years ago. He also grows, harvests and cooks Sugar Cane and cooks it into Syrup the traditional way over open fire.
His current main business is an incredible line of Food Goods, called...Food for the Southern Soul. The entire line is all excellent from the spices, to the beef jerky, to the sauces. My personal favorite being the “Mr. Jimmys Pick-Me-Up” Bloody Mary Mix.
Jimmy is one of a kind and I’m lucky to call him a friend.
